Mahmoud Ahmed & Imperial Bodyguard Band 1972-1974
This is the fourth title in the phenomenal Ethiopiques series dedicated to the star singer of “swinging Addis”. This volume is a collection of Mahmoud Ahmed’s vinyl releases with the Imperial Bodyguard Band between 1972 and 1974. The young Mahmoud started his career with this prestigious outfit in 1962, before leaving the group in 74, at the end of Hailé Sélassié’s reign. This album captures all the passion and energy of that golden age of Ethiopian music. There is nothing military about the sound of the band, except the precision of their playing and the rigour of the arrangements. The groove is wild and unstoppable, as on the classic ‘Alèm Alèm’. As for Mahmoud Ahmed, his voice is simply stunning. It’s recordings like these that earned him that ‘legendary’ tag.
